Donut Birthday Cake (16 Dec 2018)

Quick, Easy & Ready To Eat

I've been a long time fan of making birthday cakes just out of donuts or cupcakes. It's simple, easy and takes no time at all to place them on a large platter in the shape of a particular number. This one is for my daughter's 7th birthday which she had at Bunnerong Gymnastics in Matraville. Saves time and mess when it comes to serving it up at a kids party. No cutting or plating required and it's perfectly portioned out ready to eat. Seems to have been a source of inspiration for many on Facebook and Instagram so I thought I'd share on the blog as well. These mini donuts were bought from Donut King in Eastgardens — one of my guilty pleasures.

Little Italy opens in Randwick

I've been twice now to this pizza shop which has taken over where Pizza Moncur used to be. The first time was when they'd just opened around 8 Dec and I very much enjoyed the Pepperoni Speciale ($15) and the kids enjoyed the Bambini Tomato base with ham & mozzarella ($8).

Second time visit was a lazy Friday dinner using the 50% discount for first online order. They were getting a bit slammed with dinner orders at the time so it took 20-25 mins longer than expected for the pickup. Hungry family satisfied in the end though. Bambini Tomato base with ham & mozzarella ($8) still a kid favourite. Gamberi - Prawns, mozzarella, oregano, parmesan, chili flakes, garlic, tomato sauce ($21) was nice. Suprema - Tomato base with ham, spicy salami, cabanossi, bacon, mushroom, capsicum, onion, olives, mozzarella, oregano ($21) had a fair amount of topping which challenged the thin base integrity when picking up. Interestingly they don't put pineapple on their supreme pizza. Pepperoni with tomato & capsicum sauce with oregano, mozzarella, chilli flakes ($15) can be ordered as regular, mild or wild. So far have enjoyed the regular with noticeable chilli hum.

I'm still a little confused about the 'SINCE 1967' on their website but I'm enjoying their thin pizza base and tasty toppings. Counter service has been friendly even under the pressure of being busy and managing customers when orders are taking longer than expected. There's some window bench sitting inside and a few tables outside. Pizzas are served in takeaway boxes for dining in but I'm hoping they'll be able to serve on real plates in the future to save on rubbish.

New neighbourhood Italian

First impressions of the restaurant life is nice and cosy supported with good service. Generally love a good martini and the Gibson Martini ($22) using Beefeater London Dry Gin is nicely made with 2 tasty pops of pickled onion although I'd love for 3 considering the price. Drink coasters are noticeably cool with some lovely art. Bucatini all'Amatriciana ($26) is a very tasty dish and what it lacks in size it certainly makes up in flavour. There's a pleasant chilli hum and crispy jewels of fried guanciale pork jowl that are very welcomed. This house made pasta dish is purposely sized as an entree so you can enjoy ordering more so best not to count on this dish alone filling you up. Chocolate Cannoli ($8) has a nice thin crisp texture as hoped matched with good flavour. Apparently they're very proud of their house made gelato as well and I was very tempted by the panna cotta as well.
