A boutique world of mustard

“Created in 1747 by Antoine Maille, La Maison Maille stepped into history when its refined secret recipes caught the attention of King Louis XV becoming his official purveyor of vinegar and mustard, an honour later granted by the other most prestigious European Royal Courts including Russia, Prussia, Austria and Hungary.”

Thanks to History Will Be Kind for inviting me to visit the Maille Mustard Boutique which is 1 of only 7 worldwide. Before I visited the store my experience of mustard have been pretty basic. The wholegrain, the dijon and the hot mustard come to mind. Generally I've bought Maille as a preferred brand for the wholegrain mustard but that's all I really knew of the brand. Upon arrival it's impressive to see how many mustards Maille actually do make and I never knew they also made vinegars. They also have mustard fresh from the pump served in a stoneware jar suitable for future refills. If you're curious to try before you buy there's plenty on offer at the stand to sample with some bread or at the time I visited a bit of ham and cheese. I learnt the Parmesan & Basil Mustard would be a tasty one to mix in with some pasta for a simple dish at home. Each mustard is labelled with tasting notes and recipe suggestions which I found very helpful.

The Maille Mustard Boutique showcases their boutique products while the more mainstream mustards including tartare and aioli are located on the general supermarket shelves. I personally think there would be benefit to the customer to include all the products on the Maille stand to really highlight the extent of the range. For those with money to burn they have a Mustard with Chablis White Wine and Black Truffle for $500. The stand is located at the front of the store near the check out so it's in a highly visible area although its unfortunate the service person attending the Maille stand and helping with sampling also needs to help customers at the checkout if they have any queries so it can become a bit disruptive for the taster and the service person. A dedicated person would be ideal.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: An extensive range of Maille mustards available to sample and purchase
CONS: For their standard mustards you'll need to find them within the supermarket rather than at the Maille Mustard Boutique and the service person might have to attend to other check out customers while you're interested in sampling the products
MUST TRY: As many as you can to decide which one you love
VERDICT: Great place to bring a mustard loving friend or buy a mustard gift for someone you know who will appreciate something different for their tastebuds
