Fresh and seasonal local gem

“The couple behind the ever popular and award winning Sheaf Bistro, chef Christopher Stockdale and front of house manager Jeanette Woerner are bringing their much loved modern, fresh and seasonal take on food across Kiaora Lane to Double Bay’s new dining hub. Little Jean’s menu will focus on seasonal fare driven by local market produce availability, with an emphasis on sustainable produce wherever possible.”

I’ve popped in a couple of times to this new café/bistro/restaurant which seems to be fast becoming a local gem if the reserved table signs before 12 noon are anything to go by on the first opening weekend. Cappuccino ($3.50) using Single Origin Roasters coffee was good with interesting and enjoyable flavour. Babyccino ($1.50) thankfully came with a marshmallow for the little one and a little paper bag filled with colouring sheets and stickers which kept her occupied for a little while. My preference would be if the cup was kid friendly though in case it was accidently dropped and babyccinos that are all froth will be much safer and less messy if spilled.

There’s a tempting display of freshly baked housemade pastries which attracted me. Croissant ($3.50) with house made jam is nice and buttery. The Pain au Chocolate ($4) is good too and a takeaway of the Almond Croissant ($5.50) proves a yummy winner back home for an afternoon tea with the Mrs. I returned the next day to try the Lemon Tart ($4.50) which was excellent. Thin short crust pastry with snap as hoped and wasn’t too sweet. Topped with a yummy thick meringue makes it all a new Simon Favourite. Service has been helpful and friendly even when under pressure from being busy. I like the natural light filled open space and décor features.

PROS: Tempting housemade pastries, Good coffee, Friendly service and seems to be well staffed, Nice space, Close to Woolworths parking station, Colouring sheets and stickers for the little ones
CONS: It’s gaining popularity very quickly so getting a seat might be a challenge, Hard to view the pastries if people are sitting at the counter in front of them, Babyccino could be more kid friendly
MUST TRY: Lemon Tart, Check out the pastries, Coffee
VERDICT: Looks like a great addition to Double Bay. Looking forward to returning for more coffee, pastries and checking out more of the menu.

Chur Burger Express set to open at Wintergarden, CBD Sydney (13 Mar 2015)

Churning out the burger biz

There has always been one major flaw with Chur Burger in Surry Hills — it was too far for 'my' burger lunch fix. So thankfully this one is much closer and with much more seating in the revamped Wintergarden food court. Promising to be an 'express' I'm sure the Suits of the CBD will be the new demographic rather than the hipsters of Surry Hills. Burgers await the first customers Monday 16 March. Time will tell how fast and consistent they'll be but I'm sure the experienced team will make this newbie a roaring success straight off the bat, or should I say grill. It's time to get your burger skates on before it becomes as crazy popular as the original.

PROS: Burgers — enough said, decent amount of seating in a nicely renovated food court, Reasonably priced menu, Bun-less gluten free option available
CONS: Bound to be just as popular as Surry Hills so get in early if you're keen to try it out, Limited menu but that's to keep it simple and fast I guess
MUST TRY: Any of the burgers, I'm curious to try the Brekky Burger
VERDICT: I've enjoyed the burgers in Surry Hills so I'm sure these will be just as good
